A Day Beyond Sight – Experiencing Rural Life Through Touch, Taste, Sound and Joy

On 21 June 2026, the visually impaired female students of Thaaikarangal Charitable Trust had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Hanu Reddy Mango Festival 2026 at Hanu Reddy Raghava Farms, Othivakkam, Chennai.

For many of our students, experiencing a rural farm environment was something completely new. Activities such as travelling in a bullock cart, ploughing a field, playing traditional village games and spending time in a natural farm setting were experiences they had never had before.

At Thaaikarangal Charitable Trust, we believe in creating opportunities rather than creating limitations. Being visually impaired should never prevent our students from exploring new experiences. Whenever it is safe and appropriate, we encourage them to try, experience, learn and grow.

A Taste of Rural Life

The day began with a delicious Mangolicious Breakfast, featuring special mango-inspired dishes, which the students enjoyed together at the unique 156-foot-long Hanu’s Table.

They also had the opportunity to explore different varieties of mangoes by touching, feeling and tasting them, discovering their textures, aromas and flavours through their other senses.

The students then immersed themselves in the joyful atmosphere of rural life. They particularly enjoyed the bullock cart ride, experiencing the movement and sounds of the traditional cart with great excitement.

They also enthusiastically tried ploughing and took part with great interest in various traditional village games and other rural activities organised as part of the festival. Beyond Sight

What made the day truly special was the way our students experienced the festival—not through sight, but through touch, taste, sound, movement and emotion.

They touched the mangoes, felt the soil, tasted different flavours, listened to traditional music, experienced the movement of the bullock cart and enjoyed trying activities that were completely new to them.

For one beautiful day, there was no focus on what they could not see. Instead, there was the excitement of everything they could experience.

We believe that instead of telling a visually impaired student, “You cannot do this,” we should provide a safe opportunity and say, “Try it. Experience it. Discover what you can do.” An opportunity creates an experience. An experience builds confidence. And confidence opens the door to greater independence.

The Hanu Reddy Mango Festival 2026 was therefore much more than an outing. It was a day filled with new experiences, laughter, adventure, friendship and freedom—a memorable day when our students stepped beyond familiar surroundings and experienced the joy of rural life in their own unique way.

They did not just hear about rural life.
They touched it. They felt it. They tasted it. They lived it.
A Day Beyond Sight. A Day to Remember.
